Water
is our creative and emotional energy. It is fluid, always moving
and changing, and reflective in nature.
In the element of Water, our job is to gather information. Here,
we step outside the tribal structures of Metal - the rules we have
learned about "how the world works", and what our tribe
believes is valuable. We begin to surf the sea of potential, experimenting
and collecting data. Since every generation is learning tribal rules
that are historical; since the world has changed since those rules
were put into place, the purpose of the years 14 through 27 is to
challenge the tribal rules and see which ones have enough integrity
to build upon. It is our teenagers job to test, poke, prod and put
pressure on all the tribal rules to see if they can withstand the
environmental changes those rules are experiencing. Because they
are living in the new, different, evolved world, they are excellent
resources for savvy adults to understand what the new changes will
mean for old structures.
Water is connected to all potential realities. Metal creates “the
box”, while Water can be inside the box as well as outside
of the box. It is outside the box that is the most interesting to
Water. Metal draws upon what it knows of life and the rules of how
to play the game by watching its tribe in action. Water is the mysterious
side of us that lurks in the darkness, connected to secret and astonishing
new ways of being. If our structures do not leave room for the unexpected,
Water will break down that structure and bring it in regardless.
This is why often our best laid plans fall apart – Water resists
being overly-structured and will rebel. If our structures can’t
“hold water”, it might be time to challenge some of
our most cherished beliefs. Our teens help us to examine our deepest
beliefs to learn their origin and if those beliefs are still timely.
Changing tribal structures allow larger parts of ourselves to participate
in life. If we do not question our structural beliefs, we can only
fill the structures we have learned. Rather than spending our emotional
energy angry and bitter at the limiting structures, we need to call
upon our Water energy to bring us new fantasies of how we would
like life to look, and then we need to change our beliefs to accommodate
those fantasies.
