THE
WATER PERSONALITY
The Archetype of the Shapeshifter
The Power to
Change
Water
personalities are fluid. They love to learn, and are students their
entire lives. They are quick to take in new information and make
adjustments to their structures. They are restless and always asking
"why". They learn enough about a thing to satisfy their
curiosity, then move on to the next.
Water
personalities do well in jobs where they are continually learning
something new, or jobs where they are required to be highly creative.
Curious by nature, they need strong structures in their work to
channel their creative energy, but too rigid of a structure will
cause them to lose interest. Once they have lost their enthusiasm
for their work, there is no going back. They, more than any of the
other personalities, must retain interest in what they are doing
or they will become depressed and look for distractions to keep
life interesting.
Water
people are chaotic by nature. Because their nature is shapeshifting,
they appear flighty and unreliable. In truth, their fluidity allows
them to be deeply compassionate as they can easily match another's
state of being. They spend a great deal of time in their imagination,
and can be completely satisfied with their personal story without
ever actually living it. They are very good at using imagination
to explore all the different ways to get to their end result. Once
they have explored it in their imagination, the actual task of getting
to the finish line may seem overwhelming, or simply be boring, and
they may then move on to the next new thing.
Life
Lesson - To Complete
Because
of their fluid nature and their passion for change, Water people
rarely finish what they start. Each new venture is filled with the
excitement of their imagined outcome, yet the actual day-to-day
work that is required to get to their outcome often drains them.
This should not be judged - Water personalities are the visionaries
of life, and their ability to shift quickly when they receive new
information allows them to stay ahead of the curve. You will find
Water people at the edge. They are the ones who buck the rules and
throw tradition out the door. They challenge what they have been
told continuously, keeping those around them on their toes. It is
important to Water people themselves that they complete things periodically
however, as they may feel that they drift through life with great
ideas but nothing to show for those ideas. When they feel trapped
in institutions and expected to behave predictably, they may become
depressed or feel pressured to "act out" just to keep
others from cementing them into a structure they find boring. Water
people are highly vulnerable to procrastination, which is simply
a message from their energetic field that says "this is boring",
or "I don't have enough information to proceed".
Purpose
- To Create
Water
personalities are the creatives of the world. They may be artists,
they may be handymen, or they may simply be creative in their approach
to all things. They are excellent researchers and developers, are
resourceful at finding and revealing information, and are highly
intuitive. They are energetic, inclusive and recognize change long
before it is obvious to others. When they learn to trust and take
action on their intuition, they will be able to create a life that
not only energizes themselves, but spills over and creates enthusiasm
in those around them.
Those
with high water energy may often feel like they have no momentum,
and thus embrace structures almost fanatically. They grasp at structures
that tell them what to do, when to do it, and leave no room for
change. When they find themselves out of their structure, they may
feel panic and anxiety as bits of themselves slip out of place.
While embracing rigid frameworks, they simultaneously feel constricted
and loss of excitement. Because of Water's high magnetic attraction,
these people may find themselves continuously reacting to outside
events, rather than creating their own life.
Strategies:
To
balance the Water part of your personality, you can practice the
following exercises:
Drink
lots of water. Really. You will be amazed at how much easier your
life gets.
Because
Water people tend to live in their imagination, they often feel
overwhelmed. One way to address that is to write things down. A
piece of paper is a limited structure, so filling it with things
to do, or how you're feeling about something, brings it into a manageable
framework. Feelings in particular can benefit from this type of
structure. One of my favorite worksheets has been to write down
a couple of words of what I'm upset about, then write "My anger
says......., my fear says......., my grief says..........my guilt
says......" Once I have written out everything I'm feeling,
I can see a way through the emotional swamp I've been slogging through.
If
you feel stuck or frozen, try gathering more information about where
you are attempting to go. Sometimes just a bit more knowledge will
free up the fear of the unknown.
